El Paso County To Begin Reviewing Medical Examiner Candidates In August

El Paso County is expected to conduct its first review of chief medical examiner candidates on Aug. 13, according to the job’s posting on the County’s Website.

The job was posted on June 17. Dr. Paul Shrode, the County’s previous medical examiner, was fired in May.

El Paso County Commissioner’s Court agreed by a vote of 4-0 on June 21 to hire a search firm to find a new chief medical examiner for the County. The estimated cost of hiring a search firm to find medical examiner candidates is between $22,000 to $37,000. The County approved $50,000 for the item, but it is not expected to cost that much. It’s expected to take at least three to six months to find qualified candidates.

Salary for the new medical examiner is negotiable and starts at $236,221 a year, according to the job posting.

Duties and qualifications for the job include:

– The incumbent directs department personnel, performs examinations and autopsies; testifies in court proceedings; signs official documents; creates and carries out strategic plans and policies, and ensures administrative duties for department are carried out.

-Establishes goals and objectives for the office and insures compliance with licensing and rules and regulations as set forth by the Criminal Codes of Texas and the State Board of Medical Examiners.

-The ideal candidate will have graduated from an accredited medical college or university with a Doctor of Medicine Degree. Must have, or be able to obtain within a reasonable time from selection, a Texas Medical License.

-Must be American Board of Pathology certified in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology. Eight years Medical Examiner experience, including three years management experience.
