Black Ice Covering Some Roadways

Although crews with both the city of El Paso and the Texas Department of Transportation spent most of the day Wednesday and overnight into Thursday spreading salt and sand on I-10 and U.S. 54, there are still side streets that have patches of black ice.

Ice and snow collecting on roadways slightly melted and turned to slush as cars continuously traveled over the roadways. The dropping temperatures refroze the slush, creating the dangerous and slick ice patches.

An ABC-7 crew driving from the far east side of the county spotted black ice on a long stretch of Montana, from Lee Trevino Dr. to Geronimo Dr.

El Paso police closed the following streets due to icy conditions and water main breaks:

Closures – Ice Scenic Dr. Wedgewood Dr. from Montwood Dr. to Buckwood Ave. CLOSURES – Water Main Breaks Pullman Dr. & Rojas Dr. Henry Brennan Dr. & Pullman Dr. Redd Rd. & Resler Dr. Alabama St. & McKinley Ave. Boone St. & Montana Ave. Giles Dr. & Mazatlan Dr. 100 Durrill Rd.

El Paso police said crews are working in those areas.
