Friday Openings, Closures and Delays

Many school districts and offices in the borderland will remain closed Friday, at the request of the El Paso City-County Emergency Management Center. Some others, including the City of El Paso and Fort Bliss will reopen.

It will be third consecutive day schools have shut down. They first did so on Wednesday because of weather, then yesterday after El Paso Electric announced all eight of its local power generators are down.

The company is drawing power from out of town, but has requested schools, businesses, offices and residents curtail energy use.

The El Paso Department of Transportation (EPDoT) announced Scenic Drive will remain closed as a precaution. Officials said the roadway will reopen as soon as it’s safe to do so.

EPDot explained the roadway is passable, but the snow accumulated on the mountain and on the side of the road is melting onto the roadway surface, which creates the potential for black ice.

As a result of continuing utility issues and rolling blackouts slated to continue throughout the night, Cielo Vista Mall and Sunland Park Mall will close at 5 p.m. today. The malls will be open at 10 a.m. for regular business hours on Saturday, Feb. 5th.

The following institutions will be open Friday

White Sands Missile Range

El Paso Federal Courthouse

Anamarc College

El Paso City Hall

EPISD Solo & Ensemble (Saturday, Franklin High School)
