Gas Line Rupture Forces 150 To Evacuate

Nearly 150 east El Paso residents got an early wake-up call Saturday morning after being evacuated because a 4-inch gas line ruptured.

It happened near the 7800 block of Gateway East.

El Paso Fire crews said they slowed the flow of gas to avoid major problems.

“We have a hospital next door. We want to make sure not it’s not affecting hospital or larger part of the lower valley,” said Battalion Chief Sam Pena.

“I got a call from gas company, letting me know that there was a gas leak . If we smelled gas not to call them,” said Lupe Diaz. She lived nearby, but was one of the residents who was not evacuated.

Residents said they don’t doubt this was related to the weather.

Fire officials said what caused the transmission line to rupture is still unknown. Texas Gas Services is expected to investigate the cause of the breach.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

Authorities said citizens should remember to leave the area immediately and call 911 if they notice a smell of natural gas in their home or other enclosed location, and not turn on any electrical switches or appliances.
