Cesar Chavez Holiday Reinstated For UTEP Students

The University of Texas at El Paso Faculty Senate voted Tuesday, Feb. 8, to reinstate Csar Chvez Day on March 31, 2011 as a ?no class day.?

The Faculty Senate made this decision based on a clearer understanding of the new state requirements for staff holidays, which reduced by two the number of staff holidays in 2010-2011. State holiday requirements have no direct impact on the academic calendar. As a result of Tuesday?s vote, no classes will be conducted on Cesar Chavez Day in Spring 2011.

?We regret the calendar confusion and the misunderstanding that resulted from it,? said UTEP President Diana Natalicio. ?There was absolutely no intention on the part of the Faculty Senate to dishonor Cesar Chavz or his legacy.? Natalicio also expressed her gratitude to the students and faculty who voiced their concerns and to the Faculty Senate for their expedited resolution of this matter.
