House Fire Claims Fifth Victim As Grandfather Dies
Luis Matos, the grandfather who survived a Northeast house fire that killed his wife and three grandchildren, has died according to the medical examiner.
Matos, 72, died on Friday.
It was around 1:30 a.m. Jan. 28, 2011 when flames tore through a home on the 10100 block of Wolverine Drive. Five people were trapped inside when the fire broke out, including Matos, his wife Monica Matos, 9-year-old Deman, 10-year-old Eboney and 14-year-old Isaiah.
Their 55-year-old grandmother, Monica Matos, died on the way to the hospital. Jan. 30 morning, the last surviving grandchild from the fire, 10-year-old Eboney Jones, was taken off life support, according to her mother, Camille Jones-Sanchez.
Deman was taken off life support on Jan. 28 and Isaiah was taken off life support on Jan. 29.
Fire Investigators have classified the cause of the fire as accidental. The fire started in the interior of the home near the front door.
According to a Ysleta Independent School District, spokesperson the school will coordinate a fundraiser for the family in the coming weeks.
A bank account has been opened to help the family with funeral costs. Donations can be made to the account at First Light Federal Credit Union. The account is under their father’s name, Luis Manuel Matos, and the number is 9593606.
