Update: Man Shot At Mesilla Park Trailer Home Dies; Investigated As Homicide

Update: A Mesilla Park man who was shot in the head Monday has died. Julian Pena was taken off life support at University Medical Center in El Paso early Wednesday.

He was shot at a mobile home park off Watson Lane.

Investigators said Pena, 57, and another person were sitting inside a living room when someone outside fired multiple times at the trailer home.

Pena was shot once in the head and the other person, who was not hurt, called 911.

The case is still under investigation, no arrests have been made at this time. This is the first homicide recorded in Dona Ana County for 2011.

A Mesilla Park resident remained in very serious condition Tuesday as sheriff’s continued investigating an overnight shooting.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. Monday in a trailer park off Watson Lane, located southwest of Las Cruces, outside of city limits.

Investigators have not released the male victim’s name or age.

Witnesses told ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom they have lived in the Mesilla Park area for the past 10 years, but said, recently their neighborhood has taken a turn for the worst.

“I heard some gunshots and I like fell to the floor,” a female witness, who asked not to be identified, said.

Neighbors in the area recalled the frightening sound of gunfire outside their door.

“I ran outside,” a male witness, who also asked not to be identified, said. “I seen one kid go this way, and like three or four go down that way.”

A shooting turned the trailer park off Watson Lane into an overnight crime scene.

“I was shocked,” the female witness said.

Several shots were fired at a mobile home, at least one bullet striking a man straight in the head, investigators said.

“I don’t know what’s going on now over here, break-ins and now the shooting,” the male witness said.

Investigators searched a wide area and a nearby cannel for clues to identify the shooter. At this time it is not clear exactly where the shooting happened or even a possible motive.

But neighbors said, it is unsettling to see their backyard as a crime scene investigation.

“It’s just too hard to believe that somebody could do that,” the female witness said. “I didn’t think nobody would get died, or shot and killed over some stupidity.”

Investigators are not saying if there is a suspect in the case. And also said, contrary to some reports, there is no indication this was a “drive-by” shooting.
