UTEP’s Spring Enrollment Increases

Spring semester enrollment at The University of Texas at El Paso has set a new record total of 21,109, a 4.5 percent increase over the spring 2010 figure.

Census day numbers released by UTEP?s Center for Institutional Evaluation, Research and Planning indicate that this is the sixth straight year in which spring enrollment has increased at the University.

“Undergraduate and graduate students are attracted to the quality of our programs and the power of a UTEP degree,” said UTEP President Diana Natalicio. ?With more students coming to the University to seek bachelor?s, master?s and doctoral degrees, UTEP continues to make excellent progress toward becoming the first national research university with a 21stCentury student demographic.?

With its constant focus on balancing access and excellence in higher education and providing opportunities for residents of the Paso del Norte region, UTEP also is experiencing growth in the number of new freshmen and transfer students, up 9.7 percent and 4 percent respectively.

?We continue to see undergraduate enrollments increase, both in the growth in the retention of current students and in new entering freshmen and transfers coming to UTEP,? said Craig Westman, Ph.D., associate provost for enrollment services. ?Both trends in retention and new students are encouraging as El Paso area residents continue to see UTEP as a great investment in their future educational goals.?

Doctoral student enrollment also increased to 557 in various Ph.D. programs, a 13.9 percent increase from the 2010 figure of 489. ?The continuing growth of doctoral enrollment at UTEP is a testament to the quality of our research programs and highly-competitive faculty who offer the quality education that talented and motivated students seek.? said UTEP President Diana Natalicio.

?The overall trend is very encouraging,? said Benjamin Flores, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School. ?As UTEP continues to focus its efforts on becoming a national research university we anticipate even greater numbers of students pursuing and earning doctoral degrees.?
