This Year Could Be Last For Local Science Fair Because Of Budget Crunch

With recent state budget cuts and tough times across the country the Sun Country Science Fair, which had 600 participants this past weekend, could be a thing of the past.

The problems do not stop their. The 2011 winners might be left out in the cold and not be able to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles.

“The way things are looking we don’t have enough money to send our winners to international fair,” said SCSF organizer, Brian Hopple.

School districts like EPSD, YISD,Clint ISD , have not announced if they will continue as sponsors for 2011. However, Socorro Independent School District continues to support the local science fair.

“We rely on schools. The big districts to support us with money and help with supplies we need,” said Hopple.

Hopple said even though some districts and private companies have not committed, he knows they are dedicated to promoting education and leadership programs. Meanwhile, El Paso Electric and Rio Grande Work Force have signed up for 2011 sponsors.

SCSF continues to look for new sponsors to join their efforts and send students to the international fair in Los Angeles. For more information please contact Brian Hopple at (915) 203-7935 or via E-mail: brian.hopple@prospectmtg.com .
