Pregnant Teen Dead After Being Struck By Vehicle; Mother Injured
A 30-year-old is accused of running over a pregnant teenager and her mother in Horizon City Wednesday evening. The teen and her unborn son died.
According to Horizon City police, 17-year-old Nelly Pizarro and her mother Blanca, 37, were crossing near a fire station at Darrington Road and Nunda Street shortly after sunset when they were struck by a vehicle driven by Felipe Trevizo.
Trevizo stopped to render aid, police said.
Pizarro was five months pregnant. Her baby died after arriving at the hospital, police said. The teenager died Thursday morning. She was a student at Horizon City High School.
A student there told ABC-7 they were told about Nelly’s death just after lunch. The student said Nelly, who she said she knew since kindergarten, was taking cosmetology classes so she would have a trade to support her baby. Nelly’s classmates said she was expecting a boy.
“She was very quiet. She was a very quiet girl and she was friendly,” said Miriam Ramirez, a senior at Horizon City High. “It’s terrible what happened to her, especially because of her baby; it’s very sad, you know.”
Pizarro’s mother remains in stable condition at Del Sol Medical Center, according to a news release.
Horizon City police said Trevizo has been charged with failure to yield right of way, although the case remains under investigation.
