Update: Man Who Drove Off Trans Mountain Identified

Late Sunday at 11:13 p.m., El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Trans Mountain Road westbound milepost 20 in reference to a motor vehicle accident. Early reports indicated a vehicle had gone off a cliff.

The driver was identified as Homar Navarette-Estala, 28, of the 5000 block of Louis El Paso.

Sheriff’s officials said a contributing factor in the accident will most likely be driver exhaustion.

Deputies arrived on scene a short time later & met with witnesses who told authorities they were traveling on Transmountain Rd. (westbound) when the a Maroon Chevrolet truck traveling in front of them veered to the right after passing a curve & drove off the roadway falling approximately 50 feet down the side of the mountain.

Deputies located a 1992 Maroon Chevrolet Suburban Carry-All SUV at the bottom of said location facing northwest. Deputies made contact with the driver (not ejected & sole occupant) who was responsive on scene.

The El Paso Fire Department responded on scene & deployed their rescue team to extract the driver from the wreckage. The driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The 92′ Chevrolet Truck was left at the scene until it could safely be hoisted up in daylight. since the accident occurred on Military Property. Ft. Bliss Military Police were notified of the accident.
