Crash Kills New Mexico Construction Worker; El Pasoan Critical

An El Pasoan is in critical condition and a New Mexico construction worker is dead following a collision on Interstate 25 in Southern New Mexico on Monday afternoon. According to New Mexico State Police, 38-year-old Renee Renteria of El Paso was driving a commercial vehicle that struck a construction vehicle stopped on the shoulder, which was then propelled into 51-year-old flagman Jose G. Cabral-Carranza. Cabral-Carranza, from Hatch, died at the scene. Renteria was airlifted to University Medical Center in El Paso. New Mexico State police say driver inattention is to blame. The crash occurred at mile marker 59. The driver of the construction vehicle had stopped adjacent to the signal board in the construction zone and had left his vehicle, according to police. While he was getting back into the vehicle, it was hit from behind, knocking it into Cabral-Carranza.
