City Officials: Go To ‘Cooling Centers’ To Beat Heat

The City of El Paso is encouraging residents who want to escape the heat to ride a sun metro bus to any air-conditioned destination, such as shopping centers, library or museums, and sun metro stations.

All Sun Metro buses are air-conditioned and cool.

The ABC-7 Stormtrack Weather Lab has recorded extremely hot temperatures. On Saturday, the high was 108 degrees. Sunday hit that temperature by 5 P.M. That’s the hottest temperature in El Paso so far this year.

Seniors looking to save money on their utilities or living without air conditioning can ride Sun Metro to refrigerated buildings for 30 cents per trip, with a valid ID, according to a city news release.

Active seniors looking to travel daily can save money by purchasing a weekly pass for $2.50 or a monthly pass for $10. The passes are good for an unlimited number of bus trips for the life of the pass and can be used on any regular routes, except County Routes 83 and 84.

Weekly passes can be purchased on any regular bus and at a Sun Metro ticket vending machine located at the Downtown Transfer Center (601 Santa Fe), Westside Transfer Center (7535 Remcon), Mission Valley Transfer Center (9065 Alameda), and Glory Road Transfer Center (100 E. Glory Road).

Monthly passes can be purchased at any public library, Sun Metro ticket vending machine, or at a Sun Metro ticket office located at the Eastside Transit Terminal (1165 Sunmount) and the Downtown Transfer Center (601 Santa Fe).

With the extremely hot weather, the elderly are especially susceptible to heat strokes or heat exhaustion. City officials and meteorologists encourage residents to check on elderly neighbors. Also make sure your pet has fresh water and shorten their usual walks.
