Two Wrecks, Three Dead: El Paso Police Blame Excessive Speed
Two crashes and three deaths in just 24 hours and police say excessive speed was a factor in both.
On Saturday morning, 18-year-old Luis Garcia and his brother, Andres were driving west on I-10. Police say Luis was speeding, drifted onto the left shoulder, over-corrected and slammed into a TxDoT camera pole, splitting the car in two. Both brothers died.
Then on Sunday, 28-year-old James Causey hit a guardrail under the Raynolds overpass. His car went up in the air, hit a concrete pillar and landed on the freeway. Police say, he too, was speeding.
However, there’s new technology that could be the difference between life and death.
ABC-7 reporter Celina Avila spoke with a local dealership about it. It’s called the “My Key system,” a new feature introduced this year by Ford and Lincoln.
The safety feature allows you to program a maximum speed and control how fast you or your children can drive.
Casa Ford sales rep Jason Armendariz explains how easy programming the “my key” system can be, “The max speed which you can set at 80 miles per hour.”
“Not only can you can set a maximum limit of eighty miles per hour, but if you don’t want your children driving more than a certain speed…a chime will go off, “There’s actually speed warnings at 45, 55 AND 65, ” said Armendariz.
“(It) Gives customers some peace of mind, ” said Jeff Gabbert, Vice President of Sales at Casa Ford.
He says the safety feature has been popular with parents, “I remember when my parents first said, I’m going to trust you with this car, here are the keys don’t drive too fast, don’t play music too loud and make sure you buckle up. Well, now you can have that same conversation with your kids, but reinforce it with the “My Key technology,” said Gabbert.
“My Key” technology will become standard in all Ford Lincoln vehicles next year.
And there are similar features sold independently, depending on the make and model of your car. To check the device out, click on the link below.
