Police: Boyfriend Saw Mother Beat Baby, Did Nothing

Police have arrested a second person in the beating death of a 20-month-old baby girl. Officers with the Crimes Against Persons Unit charged Jorge Sanchez, 19, with Injury to a Child (by omission). El Paso Police investigators said that Sanchez witnessed his girlfriend, Lorraine Lizzette Merjil punch her baby daughter and allegedly did nothing to stop the fatal beating on July 31.

Police said Merjil punched her daugher, Desiree Merjil, in the stomach and struck her with her fists, knee and elbow to stop the child from crying.

Desiree died a few hours later at Sierra Providence Hospital. Lorraine Merjil is now facing capital murder charges. Sanchez, who Police said is Lorraine’s boyfriend, was taken into custody yesterday.
