Police: Man Says He Killed Woman In Calif., Turns Self In

A man who says he killed someone in California turned himself in to police in El Paso during the weekend, authorities said.

A crime scene sergeant on duty at police headquarters met with the man, who identified himself as 44-year-old Gary Anthony Chavez. He told the sergeant he killed someone in Downey, Calif., a few days earlier.

There wasn’t a warrant for the man’s arrest, but the sergeant got in touch with Downey police. They told him that a 31-year-old woman, Alvina Jimenez, had recently been found dead inside an apartment.

Coordination between the Downey police investigators and El Paso detectives led to the arrest of Chavez on suspicion of murder in the death of Jimenez.

He’s being held at the El Paso County Jail nd is awaiting extradition to California.
