Affidavit: Man Pushed Wife Off Of I-10 Ledge, Repeatedly Dragged, Dropped Her

A woman fell 15 feet from Interstate 10 after her husband pushed her so hard over the guardrail that he nearly fell, according to an arrest affidavit.

The man then grabbed the woman and dragged back to their vehicle, repeatedly dropping her and causing her to hit her head on the pavement. A witness told police that she hit her head hard about 20 times before they reached the Jeep Cherokee, which was parked up on the shoulder of the highway.

The incident occurred about 1:40 a.m. Sunday on the 6500 block of I-10 East near the Airway Boulevard Exit.

Records show that the woman, 31-year-old Rocio Herrera, was seen in the Cherokee pulling away from her husband, 35-year Gutemberg Najar, after they stopped and argued on the highway shoulder.

Herrera got out of the Cherokee and ran toward the guardrail and put one leg over the guardrail. That’s when police said Najar got out and ran around the back of the Cherokee toward Herrera and pushed her over the ledge. She landed on the sidewalk of Gateway East, about 15 feet below.

Officers, who were dispatched to an “unknown problem” after several calls of a man dragging a woman into a vehicle, arrived and saw Herrera halfway in the Cherokee with her legs hanging out of the passenger’s side. Najar was covered in blood standing next to her.

Officers said Herrera, of the 700 block of Yarbrough Drive, was unconscious when they arrived. She was taken to Del Sol Medical Center where she was treated for a four- to five-inch laceration on the top of her head.

Najar, also of the 700 block of Yarbrough, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail with bond set at $50,000.
