Colleague, Political Opponents React To Willie Gandara Jr.’s Arrest

Reaction to El Paso County Commissioner Willie Gandara Jr.’s arrest and charges with drug trafficking. Gandara is running for State Rep. District 75.

Dora Oaxaca, Gandara’s senior assistant and running for his seat, County Commissioner Pct. 3. “My prayers are with his wife and daughters.”

State Rep. Inocente “Chente” Quintanilla, candidate for County Commissioner Pct. 3. “It is very disturbing that once again a county elected official has been indicted. As in the other indictments, the courts will determine guilt or innocence. Public corruption is very much an issue in elections this year. However, I will not make overreaching statements about the arrest and indictment for the purpose of scoring political points as others have done. I intend to discuss with the voters my documented record of integrity over the span of 30 years in the Socorro ISD as a teacher and as an assistant superintendent and over the span of almost ten years as a state representative. My supporters know my record as a public servant and that I have served the needs of the community and not of my personal benefit. Although I am very concerned and disappointed, I agree with County Judge Veronica Escobar in that no verdict has found the individual guilty.”

Mary Edna Gonzalez, Candidate for State Rep. District 75, said Gandara’s arrest has no bearing on her campaign and she will move forward. She sends her thoughts and prayers to his family. She also said this should serve as a reminder to the public that they should get involved in knowing who their elected officials are. “Elected officials are not only a representation of themselves, but of OUR families and the community.”

Hector Enriquez, Candidate for State Rep. District 75, said it’s a very sad situation and it will not play into his campaign. He said the public should expect more from their representatives. Enriques said there are lot of good people representing El Paso and those accused of criminal activity do not represent that. It should serve as a reminder for the public to get to know their candidates.
