TxDOT To Buy Land From PSB For Roadway Project

Residents in Canutillo, Texas, could soon see more traffic in their neighborhood.

On Wednesday, The El Paso Public Service Board agreed to sell 26 acres of land to the Texas Department of Transportation.

With that land, TxDoT plans to create a four-lane roadway connecting Interstate 10 to Doniphan Drive.

The new Spur 276 will bypass Talbot Avenue along a drainage channel.

The roadway will make room for a bicycle lane and sidewalks.

TxDoT officials say this project is the result of a community meeting held back in 2008 where most of those in attendance supported what will soon be Spur 276.

Officials say Talbot Avenue is the main route from the community of Canutillo to I-10.

With that part of the community growing, Spur 276 is expected to relieve traffic congestion.

A Canutillo Independent School District spokesman said he welcomes the new project.

He said he hopes it will relieve traffic congestion from Canutillo High School, El Paso Community College and nearby schools in the area.

A spokeswoman for the Public Service Board says the price tag for the 26 acres is about $790,000.

Blanca Del Valle with TxDoT said that price is still under negotiations.

Del Valle did tell us the estimated cost for the project is about $22 million.

Construction is expected to begin in fall of 2012.
