Texas DPS Says Driver Ran Red Light In Crash That Killed Trooper

Texas Department of Public Safety public information officer Elizabeth Barney tells ABC-7 that the report on the accident that killed DPS trooper Javier Arana Jr. is in.

According to the report, Edgardo Antonio Flores, the driver of the Ford Ranger that struck Arana’s patrol vehicle, ran the red light at the intersection of Bob Hope and Loop 375 on March 24.

Arana was responding to a pursuit when his car was struck and caught fire. He died at the scene.

Flores has not been charged.

“What upsets me (is), I don’t know what’s going happen to either one of them,” said Margie Guerrero when she heard news of the D-P-S report.

Guerrero’s son, Josue, was riding with Flores at the time of the crash.

“My son was just a passenger,” said Flores. “He’s very distraught over this, because he knows the state of being he was in and that his friend was in.”

According to Margie, Josue spent his time leading up to the car ride working on a college paper.

“My son spent all night working on a paper for UTEP. I know (Josue and Guerrero) contacted each other about going out later that night, when Edgardo got out of work. That’s all i know,” said Margie.

ABC7 tried contacting Flores at his home but no one answered.
