NUMBER ONE CAMPAIGN FOCUS:
My priority has been and will continue to be the students of Ysleta ISD.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM YOUR OPPONENTS?
I have worked hard to keep the focus on the children in all the actions I have taken during the past two and a half years. In addition, I have tried to ensure that taxpayer monies are spent wisely. I am currently working with the office of Representative Mary Gonzalez to change the Texas Education Code in order to clarify the responsibility of the internal auditor’s evaluation. I have worked well with the current board and have introduced changes to policy and the superintendent’s evaluation to improve accountability. Also, I do not have any conflicts of interest or ethical conflicts with performing the duties and responsibilities of a school board trustee.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE THAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THE POSITION YOU SEEK:
After graduating from UTEP, I worked as a national bank examiner in Oklahoma and west Texas. Upon returning to El Paso, I worked as a loan review officer with a local bank. Afterward, I provided loan review services to several local banks as a consultant. In addition, I volunteered for twelve years at Ysleta ISD schools as a room mother, PTA treasurer, vision screener and co-coordinator of volunteers.
IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO REVOKE ONE RULE IN YOUR DISTRICT IMMEDIATELY UPON TAKING OFFICE, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE?
I would change the district rule opening up the communication between the trustees and the school administration personnel.
DESCRIBE A MOMENT THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE:
9-11-2001. During the days that followed 9-11, I realized that I wanted and needed to do more to connect with and serve my community.
IN WHAT WAYS ARE EL PASO SCHOOLS ON THE RIGHT TRACK, AND IN WHAT WAYS DO THEY NEED TO CHANGE COURSE?
The vast majority of teachers and administrators in the El Paso schools have the students’ best interest at heart. Therefore, the changes that need to be made are in regard to accountability so that every student is educated and safe.
IF ELECTED, HOW WILL YOU BALANCE NEEDS OF FAMILY, YOUR CAREER AND YOUR OFFICE?
One of my first questions when I went to pick up a packet to apply for the vacant YISD board seat two and a half years ago was “How much time will it take to perform the trustee duties?” Being a stay-at-home mom has afforded me the time and flexibility to educate myself, review and attend YISD functions. In addition, my youngest will be graduating from high school in June.
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU COME TO EL PASO ?
I was born and raised in El Paso, my extended family lives here and it was a good place to raise a family. I moved back 24 years ago.
