Update: 5 killed in wreck on I-10 near Fabens identified

A rollover on I-10 ended in tragedy after two women and three children were killed early Monday morning according to officials.

El Paso County Sheriff’s officials identified the dead as 25-year-old Brittney Leigh Barnes 25, 48-year-old Candace Denise Barnes, 5-year-old Aaron Israel Arenas, 4-year-old Caiden Matthew Barnes, and 1-year-old Bethanie Ann Barnes.

The three children, two 12-year-old females and one 1-year-old female, who survived the wreck were rushed to a nearby hospital. Two of them are in critical condition.

All eight were riding in a minivan heading west on I-10 Monday morning. Investigators said one of the van’s tires blew out, causing the driver to lose control.

The minivan rolled and landed on the eastbound lanes of the freeway.

Investigators said the driver of a Ford Expedition heading east swerved to avoid hitting the van and then rolled the SUV. Three people inside the SUV were injured, but are expected to be okay.

The driver of a semi truck was not so lucky. Investigators said he was not able to avoid the minivan and crashed right into it.

As a result of that second impact, investigators believe 2 women and 3 children inside the minivan were killed.
