TEA reviewing complaint filed about EPISD Board President Leah Hanany

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The Texas Education Agency is reviewing a complaint filed about El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees President Leah Hanany.

Hanany and her fellow trustees debated Superintendent Diana Sayavedra's future with the district in a meeting on Tuesday. Many community members attended the meeting to voice their support for Sayavedra. Hanany was one of several trustees to vote in favor of brining up the issue of Sayavedra's future for discussion at Tuesday's meeting. The trustees concluded the meeting without taking any action on the item.

ABC-7 reached out to the TEA for more information on the complaint made about Hanany. An agency spokesperson sent the following statement in response:

"TEA can confirm that a complaint was filed and it is currently under review. The review of this matter remains ongoing, TEA cannot comment further.

As is the case for all complaints submitted to the agency, the complaint is reviewed to determine what next steps, if any, are necessary."

ABC-7 also contacted Hanany about the complaint. While unable to be interviewed Thursday, she sent a statement.

"The anonymous complaint to the TEA is just another chapter in the same tired tactics from the faction that lost all four races they endorsed on May 3," wrote Hanany in a text. "While they’re busy talking about me, I’m talking about what matters: the students, teachers, and families in our district. I will never waver in that focus, and I will continue working with the community to put our kids first. Again, that focus will never waver."
