Fatal collision in Far East El Paso leaves one teenager dead

One teenager died and four others were injured following a vehicular collision in far east El Paso early Sunday morning, officials said.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, just before 1 a.m. a Jeep Cherokee containing a 16-year-old driver, two 16-year-old passengers and two 17-year-old passengers collided with a brick wall.

Sheriff’s officials said the vehicle was heading westbound on the 13200 block of Lopez Road, an unpaved street, when the driver lost control of the Jeep. The vehicle then hit a brick wall, passed through and collided with an electric pole, officials said. The impact knocked power out in a neighborhood nearby.

One of the 17-year-old backseat passengers died on the scene, deputies reported. The other four teenagers were taken to an area hospital. Of the four, one passenger sustained serious head injury. All five teens involved in the accident were male.

The vehicle had a New Mexico license plate.

No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning.

Special traffic investigators were continuing an investigation into the events. A toxicology test is pending results.
