Winter storm makes roads dangerous

A strong winter storm closed roads and contributed to numerous traffic accidents over the weekend.

Interstate 10 was closed overnight in Hudspeth and Culberson Counties, just east of El Paso County.

The New Mexico Transportation Department reports I-10 East is closed in both directions from Las Cruces to the Texas state line. Motorists traveling will be detoured at the I-10/I-25 Interchange, and will have access back to Las Cruces at the University exit off of I-10 and I-25.

US-70 is closed from the NASA exit at mile marker 161 to White Sands Missile Range at mile marker 71, due to snow and low visibility over the San Augustine pass.

El Paso police report more than 25 traffic incidents, mostly weather related, since midnight.

Mesa Street is very icy in West El Paso.

Two El Paso families were involved in fatal accidents while traveling to or from high school football playoff games. The parent of a Chapin High player was killed in a crash near Amarillo involving nearly a dozen vehicles on Interstate 40.

Another person was killed when a family returning from the Bowie High game in Midland was caught up in a weather-related crash on I-10 in Culberson County.

NM 404 (the Anthony gap) is closed.

Transmountain Road is closed.

Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Blanca del Valle told KVIA state highway crews were out all night treating roads throughout El Paso County.

Crews treated Interstate 10 throughout the area, along with US 54.

Spur 601 is closed from US 54 to Loop 375.

New Mexico state police report icy conditions on Interstate 25 north of Las Cruces.

Webcams in Ruidoso and Cloudcroft showed several inches of snow accumulation in both mountain resort towns.
