El Paso’s At the Drive-In plays last U.S. tour date at Lollapalooza

At the Drive-In’s reunion tour rolled through Chicago on Sunday, Aug. 5 as the band played a headlining set at Lollapalooza.

The band’s set was streamed live on YouTube.

Lead singer Cedric Bixler Zavala, known for odd-funny-weird tweets as much as his acrobatic stage antics, peppered his onstage banter with quips about his abuelita, and radio dedications from “sad eyes,” among other things.

Much was made of guitarist Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s lack of stage energy by some fans and critics during the band’s first run of reunion shows in April. Bixler stated in tweets in April that Rodriguiz’s demeanor was due to his mother’s death in March.

Rodriguez smiled early on during “Arcarsenal,” the first song of the set, but again stayed close to his amp near Tony Hajjar’s drumset. He laughed again later in the performance between songs when a cameraman was peeking between equipment and Bixler made a funny face.

The band will play at the Reading and Leeds festivals in Europe at the end of August before playing one last gig in England.

No other dates have been announced.
