Pile of metal catches fire at metal plant in Canutillo; flames 20 feet high

A conveyor belt malfunction is being blamed for a fire at the Vinton Arcelormittal business in Canutillo, causing a pile of metal to catch fire and flames as high as 20 feet in the air.

No injuries have been reported.

Arcelormittal, which makes rebar for the industrial construction industry, is located near the intersection of Vinton Rd. and Border Steel Rd.

El Paso County Sheriff’s officials say they received a call about the fire at 3:45 p.m. with the caller saying it was an accidental fire.

There also were reports of several explosions related to the fire.

West Valley Fire Department has put out the fire but there have been a couple of flare ups.
