Las Cruces welcomes home paralympian

Las Cruces High School rolled out the red carpet to welcome back a
very special student.

Letticia Martinez, 17, just got back from competing in the 2012
Paralympics in London.

On Monday, she got ready for school, dreading having to return to reality.

“I just thought, ‘Oh, I’m going to have to walk to class, and
hopefully I remember where my classes are,'” Martinez told ABC-7.

Martinez has overcome a lot of obstacles to get where she is today.
She was born with a genetic disease that made her lose her eyesight.
Learning how to swim competitively, she said many people tried to tell
her she couldn’t.

On Monday, she walked into her school surrounded by cheers and applause.

It was all to congratulate the teen for her showing at the 2012
Paralympics. Martinez swam in five races in London. Unfortunately, she
did not win any medals. She said she’s already training for the next
Paralympics.

“I’m so touched and it just makes me so happy and I’m so glad to have
everybody here for me. It helps me get through the days and get
through swimming,” Martinez said.
