Dentists collecting candy to donate
(Nov. 2012 story)
Operation Sweet Tooth, the candy buy back program that provided the Warriors in Transition Unit at Ft. Bliss with 500 lbs of donated candy in 2011, is back by popular demand! This year, Dr. Paul Ro, DDS is continuing his partnership with the Ft. Bliss USO with the goal of beating last year’s donation. Operation Sweet Tooth encourages healthy lifestyles and the spirit of giving within our little ones while providing a much needed morale boost for our troops, “Every year Operation Sweet Tooth experiences growth and I’m impressed by the selflessness of El Paso’s kids who give up their treats for our troops and a healthier lifestyle. What’s even more impressive is that the candy doesn’t just come from El Paso, we’ve gotten candy deliveries from as far as Boston,” said Dr. Ro, DDS.
With Operation Sweet Tooth, everybody wins. Here’s how it works: El Paso kids bring their Halloween candy to Eastside Dental Care between 9a and 5p from Nov. 1st through Nov. 16th, Dr. Ro pays them $1 per lb. of individually wrapped candy, and the treats go to the USO and our troops at Ft. Bliss. Kids may choose to keep their buy back money or donate it back to the USO. Yolanda Castillo, Director for the USO-El Paso, may be reached for comment at 915.569.5644.

Operation Sweet Tooth – El Paso kids stay healthy, tooth decay is fought, and our troops get some love from our children.
There is another candy collection taking place.
Kool Smiles is asking kids to exchange their Halloween candy for a toy. The candy will then be sent in care packages to U.S. troops serving overseas via Operation Gratitude. The dental team sees this as a win-win for everyone involved, from giving children an incentive to give up candy for a great cause to teaching them about good dental hygiene, all while giving back to the troops. The five El Paso offices are participating from Thursday, Nov. 1 to Saturday, Nov. 3 during open office hours.
