Salvation Army needs help spreading Christmas joy
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- For Elia Kennedy, the sound of a small bell signals more than the start of the holiday season. It represents nearly five decades of service to the Salvation Army and a lifetime of giving back.
Kennedy has volunteered with the Salvation Army for 49 years, returning each Christmas to ring the familiar red kettle bell. She says it’s the memories and the people that keep her coming back.
“Oh, this little bell means a lot,” Kennedy said. “You ring it and people come and put money in.”
Funds raised through the Red Kettle Campaign help provide food, shelter and assistance to people in need throughout the year.
Kennedy’s commitment has not wavered, even after facing major health challenges. She was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the nerves, leaving her paralyzed nearly 20 years ago.
“I was paralyzed 20 years ago, and I thank God that I can walk now,” Kennedy said. “I can walk with a walker, but I’m in a chair. Even if you’re disabled, you can still help others.”
As the holiday season continues, Salvation Army leaders say they are in need of volunteers to help with the annual Red Kettle Campaign, one of the organization’s most important fundraisers.
“When volunteers are participating in that, it’s essentially like they’re making a donation themselves,” Joanna Estrada the director of development for the Salvation Army said.
For Kennedy, being part of the tradition is one of her favorite holiday memories.
“It means a lot because there’s a lot to give, especially around Christmas time,” she said. “That’s what we’re here for to give and to love people.”
