May 2014 story: ‘Smucker’ hosts breakfast for thousands of Fort Bliss soldiers, families

Thousands of Fort Bliss soldiers and their families showed up to Biggs Park for breakfast.

“Mission: Breakfast” was sponsored by The J.M. Smucker Company, known for its jams and breakfast pastries.

Smucker held a contest among U.S. military commissaries last fall to see which one could build the largest product display featuring the company’s products.

Fort Bliss’ commissary won first place.

Wednesday morning Biggs Park was filled with tables, breakfast booths, giveaways and entertainment for the family.

The event was tagged “Push-ups or pancakes?”, soldiers were given permission to skip out on the routine physical training only if they attended the breakfast event.

Organizers said 25,000 soldiers and families were expected.

A Smucker representative said Fort Bliss is the largest military base to host the event.

Fort Bliss Morale, Welfare and Recreation recruited hundreds of volunteers, slodiers and civilians, to help make breakfast a success.
