Man dies in mobile-home blast after SWAT standoff

A man died after an explosion at a mobile home in Vado, N.M., an investigator with the New Mexico Fire Investigations Bureau said.

Investigators with the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office say a man in the home was involved in a standoff with SWAT negotiators prior to the blast.

Kelly Jameson, a sheriff’s spokeswoman, said the SWAT team was called after a shot was fire from inside the mobile home near the intersection of Franco Road and N.M. Highway 478

Jameson told ABC-7 there was a dispute between a father and his son, who called sheriff’s deputies for help.

A deputy was on site as the son tried to enter the home at about 5 p.m. Tuesday. Jameson said that’s when the father fired a gunshot through the door.

Jameson told ABC-7 SWAT negotiators failed to convince the father, who locked himself in the home since Monday — to surrender.

Shortly before 9 p.m., Jameson said the father ignited something inside the mobile home and it exploded, Jameson said, adding the home is a total loss.
