Immigrants at Artesia, New Mexico center under quarantine

Authorities say around 600 immigrant women and children detained at a New Mexico center remain under quarantine.

The Roswell Daily Record reports (http://goo.gl/hzIdrp) that federal and local authorities said Tuesday the detained immigrants are under quarantine due to two cases of chicken pox.

U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce said Tuesday during a news conference around 30 asylum hearings are being held a day, although the immigrants are not being removed from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Artesia.

The Republican said the last confirmed case of chicken pox among the immigrant population was confirmed Thursday, starting a new 21-day quarantine period.

Artesia Mayor Phillip Burch says there are no active tuberculosis cases at the center.
