El Paso Police say that a 17-year-old driver was speeding and was distracted when he lost control and crashed Monday night.

Police say the crash sent a passenger in the vehicle to the hospital.

The collision happened just after 8 p.m. Monday on the eastbound lanes of I-10 near Sunland Park.

The driver, 17-year-old Michael Chaparro, has not been charged.

Police say he almost hit a guardrail, over-corrected and crossed all the eastbound lanes.

His passenger, 20-year-old Roberto Varela, was thrown from the truck and is now at University Medical Center.
