El Paso ISD board votes to extend Superintendent Juan Cabrera’s contract by 1 year

It’s been a year since Juan Cabrera was chosen to be the superintendent of the El Paso School District. At Tuesday’s meeting, the board of managers evaluated both his performance and contract.

The board chose to extend his five-year contract by one year, with no salary changes. He will serve five more years with district, for a total of six.

Cabrera’s initial contract was a five-year contract and $285,000 per year, including a car allowance of $1,500 a month. The district reimburses him and his wife for any travel expenses related to district business. The board also gave him three years to get a superintendent’s certification. He now has two years left to finish it.

Cabrera came from an Austin-area school district, where he was the district’s attorney. He has a law degree and a business degree.
