Killed in action abroad; Marine memorialized by family back at home

Vilma Diaz says she misses her grandson, “He was a good grandson and a beautiful person.”

Michelle Diaz remembered how her nephew used to joke around with her. She says three years after her nephew–USMC Staff Sgt. Christopher Diaz–was killed in Afghanistan, she still can’t believe he is gone, “I still think I’m going to hear his voice and say ‘Heh, Aunt Michelle, I’m doing real fine.’ He used to say that all the time. It was a joke between us and his parents and his brothers.”

A third generation Marine, Diaz died in September 2011. His family created the Memorial War Dawg Weekend. This weekend is the 2nd annual. His family says the loss of their beloved son, nephew, grandson, brother, father and husband is something they’ll always struggle with and that Christopher’s loss is always with them.
