Community Champion: El Dorado High School teacher in running for Texas Teacher of the Year

A local high school teacher could soon be named Texas Teacher of the Year.

Carlos Briano from El Dorado High School, part of the Socorro Independent School District, is one of three secondary school teachers who are finalists in the state teacher of the year competition.

Briano was named Region 19’s Teacher of the Year back in August and then interviewed with a panel of judges for the award.

Briano teaches journalism at the high school and has been there eight years.

He says earlier work experience in advertising and public information is what taught him the essentials needed to put a yearbook together.

“It was a big honor for me to even be named Teacher of the Year for my campus. I’m the only Journalism teacher so I don’t even get to collaborate with my peers but the fact that they chose me as their campus Teacher of the Year was a tremendous honor for me.”

Briano says his students’ success is the real reason he’s been nominated.

Winner will be announced in Austin on Friday.
