Suspect in fatal stabbing of Anthony, N.M. man now in custody

A man suspected of fatally stabbing an Anthony restaurant employee who was walking home after his shift in April has turned himself in to authorities.

Dona Ana County Sheriff’s officials say 20-year-old Mario Soto is being held in suspicion of first-degree murder.

They say Soto was identified as a suspect in the case shortly after the April 19 death of 21-year-old Gilberto Wences.

Wences’ shift ended at 11 p.m. and he was apparently walking through an alley when an altercation occurred.

Deputies say preliminary evidence shows Wences ran from the suspect and tried to fight back.

He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Soto was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals on Tuesday in El Paso, Texas. He is currently awaiting extradition to Dona Ana County.
