Attorney Stuart Leeds turns himself into authorities on contempt charge; bonds out

Attorney Stuart Leeds found himself at the El Paso County jail Thursday morning as he turned himself in to be booked.

Leeds was found guilty of contempt of court on Wednesday afternoon.

Judge Sam Medrano sentenced him to 30 days in jail but that doesn’t mean he’ll be serving time just yet.

Leeds was released on a $25,000 personal recognizance bond, pending review of the sentence by another judge.

Leeds is already on probation with the state bar.

This case began in 2009 when prosecutors say Leeds improperly filed a motion in a capital murder case. They said he did that to delay the trial. Leeds is being defended by his colleague Theresa Caballero.

She argued Leeds simply made a mistake and attempted to correct the record later. But the prosecution argued Leeds lied through his actions.

Caballero also called nearly a dozen witnesses to testify Leeds is honest and hard-working.
