Las Cruces man found guilty of first degree murder in shooting death

The 28-year-old man accused of shooting and killing Julian Melendres two years ag on a Las Cruces convenience store parking lot has been found guilty.

Eric Marquez has been found guilty of first degree murder and guilty of shooting from a motor vehicle. He faces a a mandatory 30-year sentence for the murder and three additional years for the second charge. His sentence has yet to be decided.

Marquez’s defense lawyer said he was defending himself when he shot Melendres because he thought Melendres had a weapon.
