UTEP announces 2013 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees
Gus Bailey, Gloria Estrada, Harry Flournoy, Wayne Hansen and Greg Joy form the 12th induction class into the UTEP Athletic Hall of Fame. They will be honored at the induction banquet on Friday, Oct. 11 at the Larry K. Durham Sports Center, as well as at the UTEP football team’s Oct. 12 home game versus Tulsa.
Bailey and Hansen will be recognized posthumously. Bailey and Flournoy hail from the Miner men’s basketball program, Estrada from women’s basketball, Hansen from football and Joy from track & field.
Bailey earned All-Western Athletic Conference and NABC All-District honors twice (1973-74) during his tenure at UTEP. In 76 games with the Miners, Bailey averaged 12.3 points and 5.8 rebounds, shooting 51.1 percent from the field. He totaled 973 points in only three seasons and recorded 12 double-double (points/rebounds) games. Bailey participated in the 1974 World Games. He was chosen in the second round of the 1974 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets and played five seasons in the league.
Estrada played on the first team in UTEP women’s basketball history (1974-75 season). She made an immediate impact as a sophomore as coach Carol Ammerman worked much of the offense around her. Estrada teamed with Shirley Acosta to give UTEP a prolific scoring tandem. She had a versatile offensive repertoire in an era before the installation of the three-point shot. She led the Miners in scoring as both a junior and senior and is tied for second in school history for most field goals made in a game (14 versus NM State on Jan. 29, 1977).
Flournoy was the leading rebounder and a team captain on the 1966 national championship squad. He played in 83 games for Texas Western, averaging 6.8 points and 10.1 rebounds. He had 221 rebounds as a sophomore, 306 as a junior and 309 as a senior. He joins Jim Barnes as the only Miners to register 300 rebounds in two separate seasons. He ranks fourth in school history with 836 rebounds. His career rebounding average is third in school annals.
Hansen played at UTEP for three years before moving on to the NFL, first with the Bears and later the Cowboys. Hansen was the center and nose tackle for the Miners from 1947-49, earning All-Border Conference honors as a senior. He opened holes for stars Fred Wendt and Pug Gabrel. He helped the Miners to a 21-7-3 record over three seasons and back-to-back Sun Bowl appearances from 1949-50. He was inserted into the Chicago Bears’ starting lineup as a rookie. He played offensive guard, defensive tackle and center before being switched to linebacker in 1955. He was selected All-Pro and made the Pro Bowl in 1956, 1957 and 1958. He was also the Bears’ defensive captain. After playing for the Cowboys from 1961-62, he later served as an assistant coach at Texas Western, Oklahoma and Stanford.
Joy won the high jump title at the 1975 and 1977 NCAA Indoor Championships. He was a four-time All-American in the high jump. Joy is one of five Miners that have won a silver medal at the Olympics (1976-high jump). He set the world indoor record (1977) and outdoor record (1978) in the high jump. He was a five-time conference champion in the event. He posted the fourth-best mark in program history in the indoor high jump with a leap of 2.23m, recorded at the 1975 Conference Championships. He also ranks fourth in the school record book in the outdoor high jump with a mark of 2.26m (1976).
