City hosting 3 community meetings to outline construction of Mesa RTS; 1st meeting tonight
The City of El Paso Engineering & Construction Management Department is scheduled to begin construction for Sun Metro Brio’s Mesa Rapid Transit System (RTS) Corridor in mid-May 2013.
In an effort to share the project details with the public, the Engineering & Construction Management Department and Sun Metro will host THREE community meetings detailed below.
The project consists of the construction of 22 bus stations along the Mesa corridor, extending from the Westside Transfer Center, 7535 Remcon, to the Downtown Transfer Center, 601 Santa Fe. Station amenities will feature:
• Bus shelters (providing wind and sun protection)
• Installation of a raised platform (providing near-level boarding)
• Pre-paid automatic ticket vending
• Benches, leaning rails, bike racks and trash cans
• Sidewalk improvements
• Landscaping and pedestrian lighting
In order to expedite the improvements, please note intermittent lane closures will be in effect throughout the 12-month construction period, with expected project completion in July 2014. Driveway access to properties will be available throughout this construction period and the appropriate traffic control measures will be in place.

ABOUT RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM (RTS)
RTS is a high-quality transit service that offers similar benefits to light rail transit, such as improved speed and reliability, but at a much lower implementation cost. RTS uses rubber-tire, high capacity vehicles, improved fare collection systems and controlled traffic signals to move riders more efficiently. Ultimately, Sun Metro passengers using the RTS will not only save money and reduce their carbon footprint, they will get to their destinations faster.
The new system will have various amenities to include: uniquely branded 60-foot articulated buses in mixed traffic; a frequency of 10 minutes (peak service) to 15 minutes (off-peak service); have less frequent stops; branded and landscaped stations with improved pedestrian amenities and signal prioritization (shorten red or lengthen green traffic signals).
