Multiple schools locked down, locked out briefly after reports of man with gun; police say it could be prank

Multiple schools in El Paso were put on lockdown or lockout Thursday after emergency dispatch reports of a man with a rifle near the schools.

A search for a man with a rifle turned up nothing near any of the schools.

“Canutillo and Franklin were locked down (and lockout) at the same time. There is nothing for residents or parents to be alarmed about. No indication of any actual armed person exists and possibly pranks in nature,” El Paso Police spokesman Chris Mears said.

Andress High School and Newman Elementary were put on lockout from 8 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. Canutillo High School was put on lockdown before noon but soon lifted.
Herrera Elementary, Brown Middle School, Kohlberg Elementary School, and Franklin High School were put on lockout from 11:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
