Anthony to hold special election for mayor’s seat

At an Anthony town hall meeting Monday, former Mayor Art Franco was not in attendance.

Anthony officials said Monday was the last day of Franco’s previous term. Instead of making him resign, they chose to let him finish out the term.

Franco was recently charged with a felony for tampering with government documents, making him legally ineligible to hold office.

Council members voted 3-2 in favor of holding a special election to replace Franco and outgoing Mayor Pro Tem Lee Vela. Councilwoman Rosie Holguin voted against a special election because she said it would cost the town money. She said she thought the council would replace Franco with another council member.

For now the town is collecting applications for mayor. A date has not yet been set for the special election
