El Paso Electric says storm damaged four utility poles; El Paso Zoo remains closed

UPDATE (11:24 AM) -- El Paso Electric has confirmed to ABC-7 that four wooden utility poles were damaged by the storms the city faced overnight.

According to a spokesperson with El Paso Electric, the wooden "structures" would be replaced by steel poles and replacement should be completed by Saturday evening.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens announced Saturday morning that the facility is temporarily closed following damage caused by a overnight thunderstorm that moved through the area.

According to officials, strong winds and severe weather caused several trees to fall throughout the Zoo grounds and damaged power lines.

Zoo officials say that no animals or staff were injured.

The Zoo is closed for guests as crews assess the damage, remove debris, and make any repairs caused by the storm. The facility is currently scheduled to reopen to the public on Sunday during its normal hours of operation, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
