2 dead in Army Apache helicopter crash in Texas: Officials

Two people are dead after a helicopter crashed in Salado, Texas, on Wednesday, according to the Bell County Sheriff's Office.

The chopper is an AH-64 U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter that crashed in a field near Fort Hood in Texas, the U.S. Army said in a statement.

The crash is still burning, but no buildings or structures were damaged, the Bell County Sheriff's Office confirmed to ABC News.

"Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts," Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, acting commanding general, said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information."

The chopper is based in Fort Hood, the Army said. Apache attack helicopters are two-seater aircraft.

The sheriff's office said it received a 911 call regarding a helicopter crash after 1:30 p.m. local time. The crash sparked a grass fire that was "out of control" when sheriff's officers arrived on the scene.

The sheriff's office confirmed this was an Apache Military helicopter.
