Cathedral Shake-up Causes Concern for Parents
Changes to Cathedral High School are upsetting some parents and students within the community.
Current Principal Brother Nicolas Gonzalez has been appointed president, and current Assistant Principal Aurora Lujan has been appointed principal.
The change will take place July 1 and has left many people within the community upset that he is being replaced after four years as the principal.
ABC-7 spoke with a few parents on a committee that has been formed to help prevent Gonzalez from losing his title as principal.
One person told ABC-7 many parents are writing a petition in hopes of getting Brother Gonzalez back on board as principal.
The majority of people ABC-7 spoke with on the committee refused to comment on the current situation.
Student Nicholas Almogovar said he is unsure about the change.
“It wouldn’t make any sense for Brother Nick to leave Cathedral,” Almogovar said. “To go into any other position that wasn’t a principal.”
ABC-7 also tried to speak with Gonzalez about the current situation, but he was not available for comment. No one was available for comment at the diocese as well.
People from the committee said the petition would be ready by next week and will give it to Bishop Mark J. Seitz to review.
