People say goodbye to City Hall, but sad for different reasons
Albert Ortiz is shooting one last video of City Hall for his Desert View Elementary class in Gasden. He’s shooting it to remember it’s history and his. But make no mistake, he’s glad to see it go.
“Lord man, it’s an ugly, ugly building,” Ortiz said.
Ortiz, an El Pasoan since his birth, says the opportunity a ballpark brings is exciting for El Paso.
“It’s also progress being made,” Ortiz said.
But on the other side of City Hall, Sal Gomez and members of El Pasoans for Responsible Government are disgusted by the demolition.
“The reason City Hall is going downtown tomorrow is because city council denied us the right to make the decision at the ballot,” Gomez said.
As he waves signs that say, “Boycott the Ballpark,” drivers scream out “Play Ball!” But Gomez isn’t defeated by the impending demolition. He said he may even try to stop it.
“I’m going to fight it to the last minute. I’m might even chain myself to the fence,” Gomez said.
