City of El Paso reports first West Nile virus death of 2026

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A man in his 50s died to neuroinvasive West Nile virus (WNV) disease in El Paso, the city said Friday. It's the first WNV death in El Paso in 2026.
As of Friday, the City of El Paso said there are six WNV cases and one death in El Paso this year.
“The Severe Central Nervous System West Nile Virus disease is extremely dangerous and can lead to potential complications, disability or even death,” said City-County Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza. “With the recent rain it is imperative that the public take precaution to decrease the risk of getting infected with WNV by practicing the four Ds to prevent mosquito bites.”
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through bites from infected mosquitoes.
Symptoms of WNV may include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Body aches
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Swollen lymph nodes
Eight out of 10 people infected with WNV won't develop symptoms, the city said. However, one in five people who are infected develop West Nile fever. West Nile fever is an illness that includes a fever and other symptoms such as body aches, joint pain, headache or a rash.
To avoid mosquito bites, you can follow the "4 Ds:"
DEET: Use insect repellents that have DEET. The ingredient makes it hard for mosquitoes to smell humans, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Repellant bottles will say if it has DEET.
Dr. Ocaranza said babies shouldn't use DEET since they have sensitive skin. Those with sensitive skin should talk to a doctor or physician for alternatives.
DRESS: Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outside.
DUSK & DAWN: Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours (from dusk to dawn) or avoid outdoor activities during this time.
DRAIN: Drain standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet bowls and birdbaths. After it rains or after watering the lawn, residents should toss standing water.
Residents can report standing water and mosquito breeding by calling (915) 212-6000 or 311.
