ABC-7 StormTrack Weather: Triple-digit heat continues Sunday and stays Monday through Thursday as storm chances are limited

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Sunday looks to have another familiar pattern to yesterday as we track isolated showers and thunderstorms over the higher elevations again today. Storm chances expected to continue diminishing as upper-level high pressure builds closer to the Borderland.

The bigger weather story will be the heat. Temperatures potentially climbing into the upper 90s to 105 degrees across southern New Mexico and far west Texas through the week ahead. The hottest stretch is expected Monday through Wednesday, when temperatures could run 10 to 12 degrees above average and approach daily records. A Heat Advisory may also be needed for parts of the Texas lowlands.

By Thursday and Friday, the upper-level ridge will shift slightly west, allowing temperatures to ease by a degree or two and giving the mountains a slightly better chance for thunderstorms. Some storms could potentially move into portions of the lowlands, although coverage remains uncertain.

Looking ahead to next weekend and the start of September, the upper-level ridge is expected to remain in place, keeping temperatures near record levels and storm chances limited mainly to the mountains. Triple-digit heat could continue into September, which would be unusual for El Paso.
